Paying It Forward
By Andrew Vo, BBA ’95
As a proud McCombs class of 1995 alumnus, I thoroughly enjoy giving back to the School of Business and staying connected with both the administration and undergraduate student body. Being part of the McCombs Alumni Advisory Board provides me with opportunities to make impactful contributions through the Student Interaction Committee which I serve on.
Another channel that allows me to “pay it forward” and give back to The University of Texas at Austin is Accenture, where I started my consulting career immediately after graduation from McCombs. Specifically, serving as a recruiting campus champion for The University of Texas at Austin is one of the most rewarding extra-curricular roles I play at Accenture. In late March, I had the opportunity to facilitate the first session of a five-part leadership series for 20 select, high-performing student leaders on campus (over half of whom were McCombs undergraduates).
This annual program, called the Accenture Leadership Series (ALS), is something that a few of our executives and I created in 2007, in order to promote leadership development for high-performing undergraduate students. Through interactive group sessions, they learn about proven leadership concepts and techniques. The key objective is to help the students become more effective leaders both at the university and within their communities.
Spending time with these students really gave me a chance to reflect on the importance of "stewardship" and the role that we can all play as graduates of the McCombs School of Business. As former students and proud alumni, whether we give our financial support and/or in-kind gifts like sharing our experiences with students through various programs, we can all make a difference to future business leaders while directly contributing to an institution which has opened up so many doors for each and every one of us.
Please step up to the challenge and join me in this summer so that we can collectively contribute to the BBA Alumni Endowed Excellence Fund campaign. If we each contribute at least $100, we can make a significant difference in the education of so many deserving Longhorns. Hook ‘em Horns!
100 for 100 Campaign
Three years ago, the McCombs BBA/MPA Alumni Advisory Board established the BBA Alumni Endowed Excellence Fund to help enhance the educational experience of students at McCombs. This endowment was created by McCombs alumni for McCombs students and will provide funding to support student-led initiatives like international case competitions, VIP speaker series and investment research and trading competitions.
As part of the 100/100Campaign, we are asking every McCombs graduate to commit only $100 to the fund; by the end of August, we hope to have reached our goal of $100,000 in cash donations. If your employer has a corporate matching program, we will get even closer to our goal and be well on our way to the $500,000 target fund size. Please consider making your $100 gift.
