Miller Wins Texas Exes Teaching Award

Since 1982, The Texas Exes Teaching Awards have recognized outstanding professors in each school and college at The University of Texas at Austin. Herb Miller, senior lecturer in the marketing department, is this year’s recipient for the McCombs School of Business.

“I felt honored, humbled, and blessed," said Miller about receiving the award, which is decided by students. "I felt like I was appreciated for my efforts.”

“The selection committee decided on Herb because of his industry experience, his incorporation of his experience into the classroom, the enthusiasm with which he teaches, and his ability to point students down the right track in their careers.” said Jeffrey Stevens, junior finance major and member of the selection committee from the Undergraduate Business Council.

“I try to personalize my lecture and my relationship with students, and let them know that I truly care for them,” Miller said. “I want to see them successful not only in the business world, but in life in general.”

The Texas Exes Teaching Awards aim to promote quality teaching at UT by publicly recognizing those teachers who have had a positive and profound influence on the educational experience of students at the university.

“It represents not only excellence in the classroom,” Stevens said, "but an attitude about teaching that encourages students to go above and beyond in their studies.”

Dean Tom Gilligan attended the ceremony and helped present the award to Miller, who also received a certificate and $1,000. The ceremony was Feb. 8, 2011, at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center in the Connally Banquet Hall. Click here for more information on the award.
